One of the much more common questions received in the veterinary clinic is when animal guardians complain of a brownish discoloration under their pet’s eyes known as eye or tear stains.  This is many typically seen in smaller lighter or white breeds such as the Maltese, Poodles, and Shih-Tzus to name just a few.  the most common cause of this is due to a partial blockage of the tear ducts of the eyes, which is common in smaller breeds for unknown reasons.

While flushing of the tear ducts can be done under sedation, this blockage typically recurs.  surgical options are available, however, typically are quite expensive. over the years there have been numerous over the counter home remedies and various products tried, all with at best partial success in my opinion and experience.  A typically used one over the years is known as Angels’ Eyes.   This product actually has an antibiotic in it known as tylosin, which acts to decrease the pigment in the tears thus helping decrease the intensity of the discoloration.

While I have seen numerous dogs helped with this product, my issue is in using an antibiotic for a non-bacterial condition long term, which may result in antibiotic resistance and potential other health issues later.  As a result, I  recommend only using such products intermittently or on a short term basis only.
